The Debt Collectors Are Getting Sneakier
Recently, there have been two cases of interest where the Debt Collectors have been getting sneakier. It seems that the Debt Collectors are now starting to impersonate Courts and Sheriffs.
This is a sign of the times, and I'm sure this is not the end of the scams that the Debt Collectors will employ. I don't know if it is a sign of their desperation or whether they actually think that consumers are so scared that they can take advantage of them while breaking the law themselves.
If you owe a debt, and you are contacted by a debt collector, ask yourself this: Does this communication pass the smell test? If it looks legitimate, you must still investigate whether this is one of your debts or not, and whether this debt collector has the right to collect the debt.
If the communication doesn't pass the smell test, then you still need to be wary of who is contacting you. Please do not give out any personal information without contacting an attorney.
Last week we were contacted by several individuals who were targeted by a scam company seeking to collect on old debts which were paid.
Be careful out there.
